OPAL Play

OPAL Play (Outdoor Play and Learning) is transforming playtimes at our school into rich, purposeful and inclusive opportunities for every child to thrive. We believe that play is not a break from learning – it is a vital part of it, offering children time to develop the skills and qualities they need for life.

Through OPAL, children are encouraged to explore, create, collaborate and take healthy risks in a safe and supportive environment. Access to a wider range of materials and play opportunities allows children to use their imagination, build friendships, solve problems and develop independence. These experiences support physical development, emotional wellbeing and social skills, helping children to return to learning settled, focused and ready to engage.

High quality play through OPAL has a positive impact on the whole school community. Children are more active, confident and resilient, learning how to negotiate, share, lead and care for one another. Inclusive play opportunities ensure that all children can take part, feel valued and experience success. By investing in rich outdoor play, we are supporting children’s wellbeing, improving behaviour and nurturing happy, confident learners.

Our school grounds provide a rich and varied environment where OPAL Play can truly flourish. Children enjoy a giant mud kitchen that encourages imaginative and collaborative play, alongside a dinosaurs and fairies adventure space that sparks creativity and storytelling. Opportunities for dressing up and music allow children to express themselves freely, while quiet spaces offer calm areas for reflection and regulation. The Lodge is a much loved space, providing activities such as pool, darts, a home corner and imaginative small world play, supporting social skills, turn taking and teamwork. Outdoor ball games promote physical activity and cooperation, while our reading garden offers a peaceful place to enjoy books outdoors. Children also benefit from access to a wildlife pond, nurturing curiosity and respect for nature, and a supervised campfire area, where shared experiences build confidence, independence and a strong sense of community.

We are really enjoying our OPAL journey. We are very grateful for the support and donations from families and local businesses that allow us to continue to enhance and develop new play opportunities for our children.
