Our Christian Vision and Values

Learning and Growing together so that we can live life in all its fullness

โ€œI have come so you might have life โ€“ life in all its fullnessโ€ John 10:10

Our Christian values of Forgiveness, Respect, Caring, Honesty and Trust underpin everything we do. They guide us towards our Christian vision.

Spirituality at Tickton

The Church of Englandโ€™s Vision for Education states a core desire of โ€˜life in all its fullnessโ€™. As a Church of England school, we educate and develop the whole child ensuring social, moral, spiritual and cultural development.ย

Our shared definition of spirituality

Spirituality is the opportunity to reflect and grow into the type of people we want to be so that we might live life in all of its fullness,

When exploring spirituality, we use the shared language of: self, others, world and beauty, and beyond.

Self

  • Awareness of their own feelings and being able to reflect
  • Awareness of how unique they are and a happiness of who they are
  • Show compassion
  • Being thankful for the things they have and the person they are
  • Exploration of personal faith

Others

  • Showing empathy and understanding in relation to injustice and inequality
  • Celebrate the uniqueness of others
  • To love and be loved
  • To Be More and make a differenceย

World and Beauty

  • A sense of awe and wonder at the natural world
  • A sense of responsibility to the natural world
  • Joy in being in the natural world

Beyond

  • Encountering and experiencing God
  • Opportunities for prayer and reflection
  • Making sense of the world
  • Being open to more

Our children encounter a wide range of opportunities to develop their spirituality throughout their time with us. These include, but are not limited to:

  • A daily act of collective worship
  • Pupil worship group planning and delivering collective worship
  • Children leading in daily prayer
  • Singing through worship
  • A weekly act of celebration worship
  • Reflection areas in each classroom throughout school to encourage children to quietly reflect and prayer throughout the day
  • Regular visits to St Paulโ€™s Church to join in with services
  • Teaching morals through our school values of forgiveness, respect, caring, honesty and trust
  • School value rewards and recognition
  • Quiet spaces where children have the time to โ€˜read, relax and reflectโ€™
  • Forest School offering opportunities for awe and wonder
  • Displays around school are thought-provoking and encourage children to be reflective
  • Children understand that mistakes will be forgiven in line with our school value of Forgiveness

Spirituality in Our Curriculum

Our ambitious curriculum ensure that children are exposed to a variety of spiritual experiences and deep meaningful questions. Childrenโ€™s spiritual development is shown by their:

  • Beliefs, religious or otherwise, which inform their perspective on life and the decisions they make
  • The respect they show for different peopleโ€™s values and feelings
  • Sense of enjoyment and wonder in learning about themselves, others and the world around them
  • Use of imagination and creativity in their learning
  • Confidence to reflect on their experiences
  • Opportunities to reflect on big questions

Impact of Spirituality

In developing spirituality, our children realise how wonderful and loved they are and realise their own potential. They are self-aware and show empathy towards others in and out of school.ย  Our children are curious, open-minded and explorative. They can express and understand feelings and have a strong moral sense of right and wrong.ย

Courageous Advocacy

Courageous advocacy in an important term that is embedded within our church school ethos and school values:ย  forgiveness, respect, caring, honesty and trust.ย ย  Our School regularly plan fundraising events to support national and international causes.ย ย In recent years, we have carried out a range of different fundraising events to support many good causes including:

  • Sports Reliefย
  • Children in Need
  • The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
  • Comic Reliefย
  • Ukraine Appeal
  • Harvest Food Banks
  • World Wildlife Foundation

We are committed to giving all pupils equal opportunities and discrimination is not tolerated. Our vision, values and curriculum encourage greater involvement in environmental issues and an understanding of the world.

OPAL

OPAL Play (Outdoor Play and Learning) brings our school vision of โ€œLearning and growing together so that we can live life in all its fullnessโ€ to life each day. Inspired by Jesusโ€™ words in John 10:10, we believe that play is a vital and joyful part of childhood through which all children can flourish.

Through OPAL, our outdoor playtimes are transformed into inclusive, adventurous and purposeful experiences. Children are given time, space and freedom to explore, imagine, build relationships and develop their Godโ€‘given potential. These rich play opportunities support childrenโ€™s physical, emotional, social and spiritual development, helping them to grow in confidence, resilience and independence.

Our Christian values of forgiveness, respect, caring, honesty and trust underpin OPAL Play in practice. Children learn to care for one another, resolve differences thoughtfully, take responsibility and include others. By investing in highโ€‘quality play, we are nurturing happy, confident children who learn and grow together, ready to live life in all its fullness.

Our School prayer

Oh Lord,

Bless our School, so that we can learn and grow together and live life in all its fullness

Amen

Church Links

As a church school, we have very strong links with St Paulโ€™s Church and the Methodist Chapel and in the village. We are fortunate that the location of both are very close to the school.

Children visit the church regularly to learn about specific times in the liturgical year or to take part in special services.ย  These include visits to learn about Easter, Pentecost, Christmas and other special ceremonies including baptism and marriage.

Special services include: Harvest, Remembrance, carol concerts, Easter, Year 6 leavers service.

Members of the local church and youth leaders at Beverley Minster come into school regularly to deliver collective worship, offer insight into a life of faith through religious education and to run our โ€˜Incrediblesโ€™ club, where children learn about bible stories through crafts. We also work with the organisers of the local Youth CAF.

Christian Governance

Our governing body includes 2 foundation governors who represent the church authority. They ensure the school is conducted in accordance with its trust deed and that its religious character and distinctiveness is preserved and developed. One of those is the Ex-Officio Foundation Governor who holds the responsibility for the local parish vicar, who serves by virtue of their office. They are appointed by the Diocese.
